Thomas I. Cochrane, MD, MBA - Faculty Associate

Thos learned about the Institute in 2006 while designing a study to evaluate the training of neurology residents in the art of conducting difficult conversations. After participating in a workshop, he incorporated the PERCS methodology into his study methodology.

Thos is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and subspecialist in neuromuscular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In 2004-5, he completed Harvard Medical School’s Fellowship in Medical Ethics, and in 2005-6 he was a Faculty Fellow in Ethics at the Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics at Harvard University. He currently spends approximately half his time on clinical and academic work in medical ethics. He is active with the BWH ethics consultation service and ethics committee, and is one of several ethicists selected to form a new Harvard-wide research ethics consultation service. He is the Principal Investigator of a study, funded by the American Academy of Neurology, to measure the effect of resident participation in a modified version of the PERCS workshop. His work in ethics to date has centered on the ethics of decision-making for patients with brain injury, and has included critique of the ethical standards employed in organ donation.
