Dara became involved with the Institute in 2005 when she began facilitating the PERCS: Difficult Conversations in Neonatal Intensive Care course. A few years later, in partnership with David Browning, she spearheaded an initiative aimed at supporting clinicians in Special Care and Newborn Nurseries in their difficult conversations with families.
“I really enjoy my work with the Institute. By taking the time to carefully dissect the difficult conversations that are enacted during the workshop, I feel that I am continually learning — along with our attendees — how to truly improve our communication skills with families.”
Dara is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and has been Associate Director of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) since August 2004. She serves as a Harvard Medical School Academy Member and is actively involved in medical education, tutoring, mentoring, and lecturing medical students. Since 2001 she has been a co-director of the Newborn Medicine Summer Student Research Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. Dara is also the leader of the BIDMC NICU Team Training Committee, which focuses on educating all clinicians in the NICU about teamwork, with the long-term goal of improving patient safety and enhancing family and staff satisfaction. As a Senior Academy Member at BIDMC, she provides leadership for professional activities, faculty assessment, and curriculum development.
Dara is co-author of Neonatology Review, the first board review book for fellows preparing for the Perinatal/Neonatal Medicine specialty exam. She is also co-editor of a textbook, Primary Care of the Premature Infant, which is a clinical guide for primary care providers who care for premature infants after they are discharged from the hospital. Recently she joined the editorial board of NeoReviews, an AAP-sponsored organization, and prior to that, she was on the editorial board of NeoReviews Plus since 2007.
